About this aircraft

1939 Porterfield CP50 - Rare, Historically Significant Classic
Seitz Aviation is proud to present an exceptionally rare 1939 Porterfield CP50, believed to be the only known flying example in the United States and one of only four known to exist worldwide.
This Porterfield has a remarkable history spanning more than 85 years. The aircraft last flew in 1948, when it was flown to Yakima and its engine was removed for overhaul. While the engine was being repaired, a windstorm overturned the aircraft and caused substantial damage. Unable to afford both the engine work and airframe repairs, the owner eventually sold the aircraft as a project.
The Porterfield was subsequently moved to the Seattle area, where it remained in storage for approximately 50 years. The current owners acquired the project in 1998 and carefully stored it for another 25 years while collecting the pieces, parts, and period-correct components necessary to bring this historic airplane back to life.
Meticulous Restoration
A comprehensive restoration began in early 2023 and was completed in June 2024. Particular attention was given to preserving the airplane's originality and historical character. According to the owners, the completed aircraft retains a majority of its original components or utilizes appropriate period-correct replacement parts.
After being grounded for more than seven decades, this remarkable Porterfield has once again returned to flying condition.
Power is provided by a 50-horsepower Continental A50 with a maximum engine speed of 1,900 RPM. Performance is true to the airplane's pre-war roots, with an approximate 80 MPH cruise speed, 90 MPH maximum speed, and 120 MPH VNE.
An Extremely Rare Opportunity
Only four Porterfield CP50s are reportedly known to exist today. This aircraft is believed to be the only flying example in the United States. Another flying example is reportedly located in London, England, with another aircraft displayed at the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum in Hood River, Oregon, and a fourth surviving as a restoration project on the East Coast.
Aircraft of this rarity seldom become available. With its extraordinary history, decades-long preservation, recently completed restoration, and return to flight, this 1939 Porterfield CP50 represents an opportunity to become the next caretaker of a genuine piece of pre-war American aviation history.
