    Airframe Description:

    MILHOLLAND LEGAL EAGLE - APPROX 90% COMPLETE - £2,800

    BACKGROUND

In 2020 my dad purchased the plans for a Legal Eagle and embarked on the most ambitious project of his life. He dedicated himself to it for five years and spent hundreds of very happy hours building it. Sadly he passed away earlier this year with the project around 90% complete. We are now looking for the right person to see it through to completion.

    DESIGN

The aircraft was designed by Leonard Milholland of Brookshire, Texas and was introduced in 1998. It is believed that over a hundred have been built in the US. Once complete this project will be only the second example of a Legal Eagle in the UK. The design meets the British Microlight Aircraft Association’s criteria for SSDR.

The aircraft has a length of 13 ft (3.96m) and a wingspan of 23 ft 6 in (7.16m). The empty weight is 244 lb (111 kg) and the maximum gross weight is 500 lb (227 kg). It is powered by a 30hp VW engine and has a maximum cruising speed of 60 mph.

    ENGINE

Dad began with the engine, and as a motor mechanic all his life building this was something that came very easily to him. It is known as a “Half VW” - originally a 4-cylinder VW engine with two cylinders removed. It has run and dad was very satisfied with it.

    FUSELAGE

The fuselage is formed of 4130 steel tube, purchased through the LAS who imported it from Wilco Corp. of Wichita, Kansas. We have all the invoices for the purchases showing a total spend of approximately £1,500.

    WINGS

The wings are made of wood and formed of 11 ribs and front and rear spars. The ailerons have been constructed but are not yet attached. The wood was purchased from Sykes Timber and LAS. Approximately £2,100 was spent on timber, and again we have all the invoices to attest to this.

    DOCUMENTATION

The sale includes a folder containing a printed copy of the plans and the invoices described above.

    PRICE

You will note that a total of £3,600 has been spent on steel and timber alone. This doesn’t include the engine, propeller, fuel tank, wheels and other fittings and accessories that will of course come with it. As I said earlier our main goal is to find the right person who will embrace this project the way dad did and see it through to completion. We are not looking to recover all of the money he spent on it but we feel he would not want us to give it away, given the hundreds of hours and thousands of pounds he invested in it. We have therefore decided on an asking price of £2,800.

    LOCATION

The aircraft is located in Nuneaton in the Midlands. Viewings are most welcome. The buyer must arrange collection. As a point of reference please note the dimensions given above.
